Cephonodes hylas
The Pellucid Hawk Moth (Cephonodes hylas) is a moth of the family Sphingidae. Found in Africa, India, South-East Asia and Australia, the Cephonodes hylas has a wingspan of 45–73 mm. Its larvae feed on Burchellia, Gardenia, Kraussia, Pavetta and Vangueria species.
In the house
Several attempts to photograph this hawk-moth on the wing was a failure because of its flight pattern that is reminiscent of that of a hummingbird. It would hover for a while over flowers it sips from, swerve from side to side and then moves on to the next one. All these motion occurs in split seconds, making this hawk moth nearly an impossible case with my point and shoot. Early one morning, I was pleased to find it still asleep near the ceiling of a corridor. I had long given up on it.
