Julia Heliconian Butterfly

Description:

Several individuals of this large and bright butterfly were landing along the roadside. There are slight variations in the tones of orange and yellow. Family Nymphalidae, it is the only species of it's genus. In addition to feeding on the nectar of flowers such as Lantana, it has been recorded feeding on the tears of Caiman and Alligators, even irritating their eyes to produce tears.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.
