A small fly about 6 mm long with well separated red eyes. Thin white lines seen along the lateral and median margins of eyes. Except for sparse stiff hairs, the thorax was smooth and shiny. Untinted wings showed black patterns. A narrow waist broadened to a black rounded abdomen with each segment showing a thin white line along the posterior margin. Every few seconds, the fly held its wings out briefly but made no movements as seen in Boatman flies. The wing pattern was also diff
Spotted walking up and down a young wattle (Acacia) plant.
Every few seconds, the fly held its wings out briefly but made no movements as seen in Boatman flies. The wing pattern was also different to that seen in Boatman fly. Resembles flies from at least 3 different families - signal flies, Scarab flies and fruit flies. Thanks to stho002 for pointing me in the right direction for an ID.
