male long-horn bees

Melissodes robustior

Description:

Sleeping male long-horn bees; individual male long-horn bee

Habitat:

Residence backyard

Notes:

I have planted both front and back yards with plants to attract and support native bees, and presently have upwards of 30 species foraging among the colorful blooms. Build it and they will come. Male long-horn bees habitually sleep in groups, either inside a flower or holding onto a stem with their jaws. They begin looking for suitable nap sites by late afternoon or early evening. Boys night out, so to speak.
