A dense, rounded cluster of tubular flowers at the top of a square stem...this crimson variety is not often seen....second photo is of the more common lavender variety

Habitat:

Dry fields, thickets and borders-widespread in southeastern Canada, to the southeast USA and to the Mississippi River

This spotting was on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Western North Carolina, USA
