Bolas Spider

Mastophora leucabulba

Description:

Family: Araneidae. Orb weaving family, but does not spin a typical web. Length: 15 mm (1/2 inch) Female due to large size. White with two large chocolate brown bumps. They hunt by using a sticky 'capture blob' of silk on the end of a line called bolas. (Also called Angling spiders)

Habitat:

Neighbor's yard - found on a cherry tree.

Notes:

I thought it was a snail at first. I put it on top of my light blue camera lens cleaning cloth on the ground. I am surprised this very live spider let me turn it over.
