Looks like a conquistador's hat!
It's one of the few brown flowers that I'm aware of in this area. It's incredibly fragrant as well. The plant was a valuable food source for the native peoples and has been investigated as a permaculture crop. Unfortunately it contains some substance that can make a small percentage of those who eat it violently ill.
Very interesting flower!
