Eastern carpenter bee

Xylocopa virginica

Description:

The male of this species has a pale yellow clypeus (lower front of face), making them easy to pick out. Male bees do not have stingers (which are modified ovipositors), and so can be held without risk of sting. If they feel especially threatened they will try to bite, but we usually just let them fly away before they get agitated.
