Cryptopid Centipede

Theatops californiensis

Description:

About 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long reddish orange centipede. These are resilient centipedes. The area had been ravaged by wildfires in recent years - killing much of the wildlife and vegetation. Each segment is an armored plate that can bend, allowing the centipede to move across uneven surfaces.

Habitat:

Found under a stone in eastern Washington. Shrub-steppe.
