Field Thistle

Cirsium discolor

Description:

This thistle is about 36 inches tall. The stem is upright and hairy. Leaves are alternate, wider at the base than the top. Leaves are deeply lobed, armed with sharp spines. It has purple flowers about 1.5 inches wide.

Habitat:

Spotted at Tamarac near the Visitor Center. It grows in open land on moist to dry soils.

Notes:

Field thistle is a member of the Sunflower family.
