Eastern Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina carolina

Description:

I rescued this beautiful guy from a busy highway a few days ago. Two cars were inches from hitting him before I could get to him. He was heading straight for another road (if he didn't get hit) so I put him in my car and transported him to behind my apartment complex a mile or two down the road. There he has access to a creek and lots of foliage. Eastern Box Turtles are only one of two species of box turtles found in the US. They are currently listed as a threatened species.

Notes:

His defense against me was to pee... a lot. Other than that act, he was a very friendly and curious little turtle. He didn't try to close himself up inside of his shell at any point during my short possession of him. Quite a sweet turtle.
