Red-spotted Purple

Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Description:

Gorgeous blue butterflies. Some had orange/gold spots. There was a small amount of cola spilled on the ground and apparently they liked it. They allowed me to get right up on them with my camera.

Notes:

This was on Natchez Trace Parkway at a rest stop.

I've always heard that puddling in when butterflies glean minerals from the earth to help in the mating process. Need to look that up.

Thank you! It didn't appear to. We were there for over an hour and they were fluttering around and appeared to be fine. Thank you for identifying them!

Lovely! I've seen mud puddling but not cola puddling!
