A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Bubo virginianus
One of the parents and one of the owlets were hanging out on the tree branches in an Ash tree forest at the local refuge. The bright backlighting from the sky made exposure difficult. These branches were basically overhanging the road and I needed to shoot almost straight up to get the pictures. I had never before witnessed a sleeping owlet laying on his/her tummy, on a branch of a tree. I got shots both with the eyes closed and open. This is one tired owlet!
These birds of prey are prevalent in most of North America and hunt mainly at night.
This particular parent has raised owlets on the refuge for at least the last three years.
