Northern Shrike

Lanius excubitor

Description:

Large head, narrow black mask, pale gray upperparts, gray-white underparts, black wings.

Habitat:

Open country with sufficient perches for hunting. Will use fence posts and roadside signs.

Notes:

I caught this bird hovering and diving against a bright white sky. This bird is about as close to being a raptor as you can get, without actually being a raptor. The Northern Shrike often will impale its prey, sometimes while prey is still alive, on thorns, spines, or barbed wire

Oh, Dennis. Even with a good camera and a bird in hand, who could take such a superb shot? Clearly you can! Well done!
