Large head, narrow black mask, pale gray upperparts, gray-white underparts, black wings.
Open country with sufficient perches for hunting. Will use fence posts and roadside signs.
I caught this bird hovering and diving against a bright white sky. This bird is about as close to being a raptor as you can get, without actually being a raptor. The Northern Shrike often will impale its prey, sometimes while prey is still alive, on thorns, spines, or barbed wire
