Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

Probably the most common hawk in the U.S. Rufous tail, yellowish legs, brownish eye, and white spots on the back. Many times its breast is whitish with a wide band of brown spots going across horizontally.

Habitat:

Open areas and a wide range of habitats.

Notes:

I was lucky the hawk decided to fly quite low for this photo.

Well, they certainly can't use an eagle call - it a pathetic squeak of a thing compared to the majesty of the the bird.

Yes, I have noticed that! No matter what large bird they are showing in the movie, the call is always that of a Red-tailed Hawk it seems. I've seen them show eagles and vultures, yet still play the call of this hawk. Good observation!

This is also the bird whose call sound engineers use to establish a sense of place in every movie that is supposed to be set in the American west.
