Bottle Nose Dolphin

Tursiops truncatus

Description:

This is Winter the Dolphin. Winter lives not too far from me at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. It's a Marine Animal Hospital. Their mission is to Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release marine animals. Winter would not survive in the wild so she resides there. Winter lost her tail after being tagled in crab trap lines when she was 2 months old. A prosthetic Tail was created for her. Video I took of Winter and her prosthetic Tail: http://youtu.be/kHJoKaE-DL0

Habitat:

For Winter it's at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. webcam of Winter: http://seewinter.com/winter/media/webcam...

Notes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_(dol...) Winter was found off the coast of Florida in December 2006 at age 3 months, caught in a crab trap, and would eventually lose her tail as a result. She was fitted with a silicone and plastic tail which enables her to swim normally. She has since become a popular attraction at the aquarium, and a 2011 film has been produced based on her story. A popular Scholastic non-fiction picture book entitled Winter's Tale was published in 2007 chronicling her true story. CMA (Clearwater Marine Aquarium) is the leader in collaborative partnerships which support marine environmental awareness, research, and stewardship. CMA inspires passion to respect and protect our marine life and environment for future generations.

They are planning to rebuild the aquarium and have broken ground. They had a large contribution but are trying to get more donors to help meet their goal. I imagine that the attention from the movie will get them some more donors.

I can tell you when I went deep sea fishing...we dreaded when the dolphins arrived because they'd eat our fish before we could get them to the surface. Otherwise, I love dolphins and porpoises, and manatees, and whales.

Do the proceeds of the movie go to her new aquarium? I hope so. I was reading where Winter needed some more money for a new habitat since she is unreleasable.

Yes, that's Winter. She played herself in the movie "Dolphin Tail." The movie was inspired by her story. I saw the movie yesterday and loved it!

Is this the dolphin in the movie?

Ive havent seen the movie yet, but it brakes my heart when I realise situations like this that human activity impacts nature in such a devastating way
