Giant Underwing Moth

Description:

This moth was huge for an Underwing, 5 cm in length. It had an odd crest on the thorax that was bright orange on the scales facing forward. The underwings were bright orange with a central black spot and a black band on the bottom. I only caught one look at the underwings before it flew away and I wasn't able to get a picture. Family Erebidae (Noctuidae).

Habitat:

Came to the parking lights of a shopping mall, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Thank you Leuba, it was very striking in both color and size! The eyes get that funny impression that they are looking at you somehow, from the angle of reflection on the ommatidia.

I can imagine how beautiful the under wings would have been. Love the shot of the crest on thorax as well. Their eyes make me laugh - they look like they've gone cross-eyed after landing heavily on their belly !
Brilliant spotting Lauren !!
