Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

One of the three largest herons in the world. Photos: A battle with a snake

Habitat:

Marshes, wetlands, bogs, swamps, river and lake edges.

Notes:

I shot this series of a Blue Heron capturing a snake at the Ridgefield NWR. The first photo shows the snake wrapped around the bird's neck. In reaction, the bird immediately jumps into the air, kicking and flapping its wings to try to remove the snake. The snake does fall off and the heron picks it up and makes it lunch. The 4th photo shows the snake falling to the ground.

This is a spectacular series of the heron hunting a snake. It could go in the Hunters and Animal Feeding Behaviors mission. Also, picture #5 isn't loading; can you re-load it?
