There are currently two genera of NZ geckos. Of the two I think it would be Hoplodactylus. And of the images I consulted, the species Hoplodactylus pacificus (Pacific gecko) looks closest to me. You mentioned it being a captive. I guess that means it was wild caught and a NZ native? Be careful with releasing. Maybe you should contact a conservation department for advice. Cheers
