Spotted Tussock Moth Caterpillar

Lophocampa maculata

Description:

Banded black, yellow, black; white tufts at each end. This caterpiller has the black spots down the middle of its back that are typical of those found in eastern North America.

Habitat:

Local habit for this spotting: poplars, birches, maples. Spotted on a path that is protected from the sun by an overhang.

Notes:

Sometimes called the Yellow Wooly bear because of its resemblance to that banded caterpillar.
