Red Velvet Mite

Erythraeidae

4mm, red velvety texture, doesn't like to stand still. I kept it for days waiting for it to tire long enough to get these shots, then released it back outside.

Habitat:

Understandable. I'd be worried about that too.

Thanks! Yes, I've done that before, but this thing was so tiny I was afraid I wouldn't know how long to leave it and then it would be dead and all curled up.

Very nice photos. Have you tried putting critters in the fridge to cool/slow them down for photographing? Might work better than waiting days for them to tire. Just an idea.

Thanks, guys! Like I said, I kept it for a while and waited for it to get tired. ;-)
