Carpenter Bee, I guess because they drill a whole to crawl in usually in trees or rotten wood or sometime in wooden walls. put 2 thumbs together and you have his size, when he flies past you he has a loud humming sound, Black, fat and big eyes with antennae like a tuning fork. black wings.
in rotten wood to nest and maybe old trees or houses, it flies everywhere but he wont sting as far as I know. maybe only in tropical settings.
The head looks like an Astronaut's helmet.

Hi KristalWatrous, how do we differentiate the males from females ?
I just found one carpenter bee just nearby this spotting's location.

Cool spotting
Beautiful bee. The males, such as this one, cannot sting - the sting is a modified ovipositor and thus only possessed by the females. Males can often be found hovering or standing watch on tall plants, fenceposts, etc. as they are on the lookout for females to mate with. The larger-than-average eyes, erect antennae and behavior indicate that this is a male.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
