Black & Yellow Garden Spider

Argiope aurantia

Description:

Found along a trail near Coleman Fish Hatchery, Anderson, California.

Habitat:

Garden Spiders often build webs in areas adjacent to open sunny fields where they stay concealed and protected from the wind. The spider can also be found along the eaves of houses and outbuildings or in any tall vegetation where they can securely stretch a web. The circular part of the female's web may reach two feet in diameter. Webs are built at elevations from two to eight feet off the ground.

LOL, it's interesting to see the variations in the body style of this species. Not just body style but markings as well, if you look at the color variations on the legs of the several that have been posted here, along with other places on the "web" hehehehe, you will see why I posed the above question.

I will not take any doubt against C. Frank Starmer.

Excellent point, Brandon! It could be a sub-species as well. I'm content to know that we at least identified the Genus. :)

I've only discovered Project Noah today but I am having so much fun ... learning so much. I love being able to share my passion for nature - specifically insects and spiders - with others. :)

Eva, I wonder if there might be some sort of bodily variant in among this particular species based on location, habitat, elevation, and diet? I am noticing that there are quite a few of these spotted here in the USA and there seems to be a variant between the lower/higher elevations, as well as region (based on climate zone)
