Killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

Long-legged, robin-sized bird. Brown on back and head, white breast and stomach with two black bands on breast. Tail is rusty red in flight.

Habitat:

Look for this bird in open areas, often nesting in short grass and rocky areas.

Notes:

When nests are approached the these birds will feign injury by dragging a wing. Always staying just out of reach it will lead predators or humans away from the nest and then "recover" to fly away.
