Ceylon Frogmouth

Batrachostomus moniliger

Description:

It is a small frogmouth found in the western ghats and also Sri lanka. Related to night jars they are found in forest habitats.

Habitat:

Its habitat is dense tropical forest usually with dense undergrowth, but sometimes found in more disturbed habitats such as plantations. Their presence can be overlooked due to their nocturnal behaviour and camouflage.

Notes:

I was so amazed that I was able to get tremendously close (about 30 cm) away from this bird. It did not see me as it was daylight and unknowingly sat in the same posture for long time thinking it is well camouflaged and no one can see it. I really hope that other photographers and bird watchers do not misuse this freedom of getting that close by disturbing the bird or scaring it off after their deed is done.
