Jeffrey Pine

Pinus jeffreyi

Description:

A 3-needled pine told apart from the very similar Ponderosa Pine (P. ponderosa) by the downward-facing prickles on the underside (umbo) of the cone scales (upward in Ponderosa) and bark that smells of vanilla or turpentine. An easy way to remember the cone difference based on how they feel in your hands is "gentle Jeff, prickly Ponderosa."
