Trembling Aspen

Populous tremuloides

Description:

Med sized deciduous tree. 20-30m tall. Forms stands from extensive shallow root system; buds not resinous or fragrant. Leaves oval to nearly circular; allowing leaves to tremble in slightest breeze. Flowers in catkins.

Habitat:

Dry ridges to rich moist sites. Well drained loamy soils.

Notes:

Aspen clones can cover several hectares and can best be distinguished in the fall when they drop their leaves at the same time. The buds, inner bark and leaves are used in many traditional medicines.
