Taxodium distichum
These deciduous trees are noted for the cypress knees that surround the trunk at ground level. It is thought that these help to anchor the tree in the loose or muddy soil. The oldest known Bald Cypress has been dated to around 364 AD.
These cypress knees (and the accompanying trees) were spotted lakeside/ slightly in the lake at a local park. South eastern USA; tropical south US; gulf coast plain FL.
