Sri Lankan Leopard

Panthera pardus kotiya

Description:

Tawny rusty yellow coat with closed rosettes . Smaller than the India leopard, sub adult .Endemic Subspecies, endangered due to poaching. This particular leopard was so calm and walked right beside our vehicle. This is the first time Im seeing a leopard.

Habitat:

Found on Wilpaththu national park. They are known to be solitary hunters .

Congrats Saumya, your rare glimpse of an endangered Sri Lankan leopard is our Spotting of the Day. The population is believed to be declining because of poaching and human-leopard conflicts.
