Description:

Low plant with clusters of white flowers that are striped with pink. Flowers usually have 5 petals with 5 stamens and pink anthers, but this one had 6 petals.

Habitat:

Wet, deciduous woodland near a stream

Notes:

This plant grows from a underground tuber, which early colonists and Native Americans used for food. The tubers have a sweet, chestnut-like flavor.
