Duskywing Skipper butterfly

Erynnis sp.

Description:

A Duskywing Skipper -- a brownish-black, medium-size butterfly -- feeding on a Purple Coneflower (Echinacea sp.). This butterfly is either a Juvenal's Duskywing (Erynnis juvenalis) or a Horace's Duskywing (Erynnis horatius). According to Ken Larsen, a well-known local butterfly expert, timing is everything: "The Juvenal's is an early breed (until June or July) and the Horace's is a later breed (July or later). If the picture were taken in July, then it is anyone's guess." Since the photos were taken on June 20th, it seems more likely this is a Juvenal's Duskywing.

I just added another photo to this spotting. Somehow, I overlooked the fourth photo in the set. Doh!

I shot the photo using my iPhone 3GS (now semi-retired); I cropped and adjusted the photo using Apple Aperture. Unrelated question: Is the wildlife in the Philippines similar to the wildlife in China?

Awesome contrast! Is that from the 4 or the 3gs? "Or with a "real" camera?

That's okay, it happens. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Couldn't agree with you more, Dan! Apparently something went terribly wrong when I edited the spotting to remove the "Great Pollinator Project" mission (per Carolina's comment).

I don't think this belongs in the Global Dragonfly mission.

Hi Geodialist! Remember the Great Pollinator Project mission is only for the NYC area :)

It is a Horace's. Juvenal's would be more patterned.
