Description:

Dark blue insect with a bright orange spot on the side. Its abdomen is gray with black in between the segments.

Habitat:

Unknown dry/dead plant in grassy area along trail at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve

Thanks oxyjack. BugGuide was kind enough to narrow it down to the genus but they couldn't determine the species based on the images.

Whoops! Didn't see that you'd already IDed the beetle to genus. It looks quite a bit like Saxinis knausii, which isn't known to be in CA (but that doesn't mean it isn't here!).
