Description:

There were dozens of these visible from the trail, probably thousands more around the lake. There was snow around and the lake was partially frozen, I guess they'd been hibernating below the surface because it is a long way to any water that didn't freeze during winter.

Habitat:

Sitting on granite rocks beside a partially frozen lake at about 10000ft
