Grey Heron

Ardea cinerea

Description:

Juvenile Grey Heron among algae, leaves and rubbish.
A tall bird, with long legs, a long beak and grey, black and white feathering. They can stand with their neck stretched out, looking for food, or hunched down with their neck bent over their chest.

Habitat:

Garden ponds, lakes, rivers and estuaries.
It feeds in shallow water, catching fish, frogs, and insects with its long bill. Herons will also take small mammals, reptiles and occasionally warbler nestlings, plovers, young and adult snipes, takes ducklings and tern chicks and other small birds. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim.
