Dassie Rat

Petromus typicus

Description:

The Dassie Rat is a unique rodent, the only member of its own family. It occurs on rocky outcroppings in Namibia (with its range just extending into northern South Africa and southern Angola). It gets its name from the Afrikaans word "dassie" which means hyrax since it superficially looks like a small hyrax, until its fluffy tail is noticed! Here a pair is mating and the second picture shows a rather confused-looking male after the female had moved off mid-coitus!

Habitat:

Rocky outcrops in arid regions
