Douc Langur (Red Shanked)

Pygathrix nemaeus

Description:

Douc langurs are one of the most beautiful primates in the world. Population sizes are not yet known, but it is believed there are just a few thousand left in the wild.

Habitat:

This attractive monkey is sometimes called the "costumed ape" for its extravagant appearance. From its knees to its ankles it sports maroon-red "stockings", and it appears to wear white forearm length gloves. Its attire is finished with black hands and feet. The golden face is framed by a white ruff, which is considerably fluffier in males. The eyelids are a soft powder blue. The tail is white with a triangle of white hair at the base,

Hi Sean. I'd never even heard of this beautiful animal before seeing your spotting here. It piqued my curiosity and I did a bit of research. I thought you might find this of interest. http://www1.dtinews.vn/news/beautiful-vi...
Rather disheartening.

Hi Carolina, I did a four day trekking tour whilst in Veitnam, we started off at a national park just south of Hanoi called Cuc Phuong National Park which is considered the oldest national park in Vietnam. We then moved south from here to another national park called Pu Mat national park, which is home to the endangered Red Shanked, we spent two days with guides to find these animals. I used a 720mm focal Length.

Wow Sean! This is an extremely endangered and elusive animal. What's the story behind where and how exactly you saw it!? - A friend tried to see them in Vietnam, but the only place he could saw them was at a primate rescue center (Cuc Phuong National park)! And what lens did you use, you got such a beautiful close up!

These lovely, shy creatures came close to extinction due to deforestation during the Viet Nam war, or, as the Vietnamese call it, the American war.
