Spotting

Description:

In this video, notice the way the caterpillar floats through the air! I have never seen this before, but it looks to be doing it through silk, but for what purpose? (Ignore my heavy creepy breathing -- we just stopped jogging up a mountain to record this.) :)

Habitat:

Old Baldy Trail that leads up to Mt. Wrightson -- one of the local mountains made up of the Coronado mountains and reached through Madera Canyon. It was at about 7,500 feet that we found the green caterpillar.

Thank you textless. :)

Anytime Karen, and yeah! I've learned how to manage, and like you say, you don't want to be unprepared when a potential spotting is seen nearby!

Really interesting - thanks for sharing!
I'm very impressed that you jog with your camera; I've just started running with my little point & shoot - I think I am becoming obsessed about not missing a shot! :)

Not sure what kind of caterpillar this is, but it's definitely attached to a silk line. Caterpillars often to do this when they need to change locations quickly, generally to escape a predator. Learn more about caterpillar silk and its uses here: http://lepcurious.blogspot.com/2011/08/c...
