Apis mellifera
Appears to be happily sipping nectar on this interesting form of flower. :) Update: the flower appears to be Cirsium neomexicanum, the New Mexico Thistle.
Was found at a high altitude -- about 8,000 feet from ground level. The trail we took was Old Baldy, which leads up to Mt. Wrightson, the highest peak of one of the many Coronado mountains that is reached through Madera Canyon, in Arizona.
