Craig, I'm new to the eastern US, so I am not the most knowledgeable about the fern flora here either. Maybe someone who knows the ferns of the northeast can weigh in and help us out?

Perhaps I was a little hasty and did wonder about the lack of colour in the waning sterile frond. I'm sure your knowledge of US ferns is deeper than mine Kristal.
