Ohio Endangered Species List? With this much orange on it is it an Eastern Plains Garter? Or can a common garter have that much orange?
This snake is only known to live in 2 of the 88 counties of Ohio!
Spotted this snake on a paved road warming itself. At first thought someone ran it over. I stopped and pick it up to find wonderful orange stripes on its sides which I am not accustomed to seeing.
Very nice pictures! Please be sure to add this to the Snakes of the United States – CSC mission to help with their citizen science project!

Some birds exhibit a red and black beak much like the tongue of this snake.
Waaaay Kewl,
thank you,
Had my wife hold this for me not knowing it was on our State's endangered list.
Looking for an expert to confirm this find - Is it an Eastern Plains Garter, which is on Ohio's endangered species list. This is important to prove.
I believe its an Easter Plains because of where the striping on the side occurs. That is, the yellow stripe occurs over the third and fourth rows of scales which is distinctive for this species.
Can anyone tell me if this is an Eastern Plain Garter snake which is on Ohio's endangered species list? the amount of orange on sides makes me wonder?
