Stinkpot

Sternotherus odoratus

Description:

Spotted in a shallow creek in central Georgia. One of the quickest ways to distinguish this turtle from other similar mud and musk turtles inhabiting the same area is the very small plastron (bottom shell, 4th pic), which offers little protection for the legs.

Habitat:

Any kind of permanent body of water, like shallow streams, ponds, rivers, or clear water lakes. While in the water, this musk turtle stays mainly in shallow areas.

Notes:

Also known as "common musk turtle", but stinkpot is so cute and fitting. When disturbed, this turtle will quickly release a foul-smelling liquid from its musk glands.
