A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Pontederia cordata
An aquatic plant that grows up to 4 feet tall, although you can only see a couple feet of that because the rest is submerged underwater. The leaves are large and heart-shaped, growing up to 10 inches long. Flowers are arranged as large spikes with clusters of purple flowers. Each flower is small (less than 1/2 inch wide) with two small yellow spots on one petal. The leaves and flowers stay above water.
Spotted growing in a bog along the Botany Trail at Van Vleck Farm and Nature Sanctuary.
