The 'Leafless' Dendrobium Orchid

Dendrobium aphyllum C.E.C. Fisch. ORCHIDACEAE

Description:

The current seasons canes are upright and purple spotted around the nodes, whilst the inflorescences are borne singularly or in pairs from the nodes of the long (up to 27cm), thin, leafless, pendulous old canes with a papery covering. The flowers are translucent, with narrow pale pink sepals, pinkish white petal and a broadly flaring trumpet shaped lip, with a pale sulphurous flush of short hairs at its’ base, sides and rear.

Habitat:

A deciduous, epiphyte and occasional lithophyte, found in evergreen lowland forests and primary montane forests at altitudes of 150-1800 meters Native to Hainan China, Assam, Bangladesh, eastern Himalayas, India, Maldive Islands, Nepal, Sri Lanka, western Himalayas, Andaman Islands, Myanamar, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi and Queensland Australia
