Rock Squirrel

Spermophilus variegatus

Description:

Rock squirrels, with their long, bushy tails, look very much like tree squirrels, but seldom climb trees. They are most commonly found in rocky habitats—canyons, cliffs, and hillsides.

Habitat:

Urban botanical garden near scrub-oak, sage foothills.

Notes:

Not sure what the source is of the tufts of fur this individual is holding. Could be one of its deceased off-spring. Predation from weasels and other animals is common. I origninally mis-identified this individual as a Uinta ground squirrel. Tail is the key to ID.
