This flower comes up with the first rains each year and subsecuently dies before the new foliage comes up. At the end of the rainy season the leaves wither and die and the plant becomes dormant. leaves have a purplish stripe down the middle and look similar to large Calathea. There are currently over 80 identified species and another 50 or so unclassified. I don't know if this plant is indiginous to Costa Rica but it is grown everywhere.

thanks again Craig...I knew it but forgot. It is a shame that it is almost impossible to identify down to species level. There is so much info on the net but not nearly enough just yet.
