Double-toothed barbet

Lybius bidentatus

Description:

A large African Barbet (fam Lybiidae), with large head and a large yellow typically barbet bill, reaching over 20 cm in length. Blue-black coat with prominent red wing bar, red underparts with white vent and cream-yellow mask around eyes. Easily recognized by two notches or dents on the bill.

Habitat:

Forest edge around Awasa lake (Ethiopia), but also often seen in open woodland and cultivated areas.

Notes:

One of my very old spottings, dating back to 2002 and my first stay in Ethiopia - and I never seen these again during my subsequent visits. Photos taken with Minolta camera - if anyone remembers those film cameras, when you needed a separate bag for your film roles when moving in the field????
