I think if the basis of your spotting is a "sign of wildlife" and you know that the sign is holes made in a tree by Colaptes campestris, then your spotting is not an unknown tree but of this bird. Consider a mammal animal track . It is filed under the animal that made it, not under the sand where it is found :-)
