Bison

Description:

The American Bison is the largest land mammal in North America. Bulls may weigh as much as 3000 lbs. Cows are smaller and tend towards brown. Bulls are brown with darker necks and heads. Fur on the front quarters tend to be thicker, especially in winter when these animals tend to face storms.

Habitat:

This is a plains bison, which tends to live in grasslands/prairies, but are also found in forested areas in mountains. Bison once spread across the North American continent and were found in mountains, savanna, and eastern deciduous forest.

Notes:

The herd at Custer State Park in South Dakota is one of the largest herds in the United States.
