Palm worm

Brassolis sophorae (Nymphalidae)

Notes:

I found this caterpillar sliding on the cement floor outside a restaurant. I knew that it would be steped sooner or later, so I took it and leaved it on a small tree. And of course, a took some photos. But the conjunction of caterpillar, tree and perspective ended up in a quite scary picture...

Hi Emma. Araucaria, the city where I spoted this caterpillar hosts an oil refinery. For many years it had what was considered the worst environmental hazard of Brazil, along with Cubatão. There were several cases of brainless newborns here. But in the last 20 years or so there was a fierce battle for recovering the environment, wich seems to have enhanced considerably since. Now, it has a huge population of birds and insects, wich are a good sign, I think. I don't know about lichens, but if I had to bet, I'd say you are right. At least, I hope so...

if that's the case, and our trees are completely covered by lichen, then I guess our air quality is good. It is, actually. But I thought it might have more to do with humidity.

lots of lichen on the tree indicates good air quality? True?

Perspective does that. And the size of the tree, that looks much bigger then it really is.
