i couldn't really remember if they were on a plant. when i saw them they were on a small rock if i'm not mistaken.. one thing for sure though is that i found them on a rocky beach...

i took this picture last year. i was never really interested before on the details of my subjects until i got into Noah..... thats why i don't have any other information about these bugs. : )

No problem! Do you know what plant they were on? That might help to identify the species.

hi! karenL....to be honest, i'm not yet sure if these really are red cotton bugs (nymph).
but as i was searching i found these sites with pictures almost similar to my spotting
http://jumbledmumblings.blogspot.com/200...
http://addithebirde.blogspot.com/2010_06.......
i am also confused here. : )
thank you by the way for helping me figuring this one out...

I don't think these are red cotton bugs as all the photos I could find of the nymphs of that species have yellow bars on the sides http://www.google.com/search?q=red+cotto...... I'm still thinking these maybe milkweed bugs.

yes, they really look like milkweed bug nymphs. i found them overcrowding a small rock on the ground..

These look a lot like large milkweed bug nymphs (Oncopeltus fasciatus) so I'm guessing they might be related. Here is a spotting I had of that species http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/726...
